Phalaenopsis pulcherrima

Phalaenopsis pulcherrima is an orchid in the genus Phalaenopsis, family Orchidaceae. It was formerly placed in the genus Doritis as Doritis pulcherrima; Doritis has since been merged into Phalaenopsis. The Flora of China gives its Chinese name as 五唇蘭 and still treats it as Doritis pulcherrima.

Its native range runs from Assam in India through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam to Hainan in China, and on to the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo. It is a lithophyte, growing on rocks or soil-covered rocks in dense forest or thickets.

It has 3 to 6 leaves, nearly all at the base of the plant, oblong, about 5 to 7.5 cm long and 1.5 to 2 cm wide. The inflorescence is upright, with a peduncle up to 38 cm long carrying several loosely spaced flowers. The flowers are often fragrant and open wide; the usual colouring is pink sepals and petals with a purple lip. In China it flowers in July and August.

The entire orchid family is listed in CITES Appendix II, and this species is included. Appendix II means international trade is regulated, not banned; it covers cross-border trade and is separate from each country's own domestic laws.
