Background
Hoya multiflora is a plant in the genus Hoya, family Apocynaceae. The iPlant database of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Botany lists 流星球兰 ("shooting-star hoya") as a common name; the Flora of China gives its Chinese name as 蜂出巢. It was once placed in a separate genus as Centrostemma multiflorum, and is now included in Hoya.
Its native range runs from Guangxi and Yunnan in China through Assam in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam to the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi, the Philippines and New Guinea. It is an epiphytic shrub growing primarily in the wet tropical biome; the Flora of China records it in open forests and bushland at 500 to 1,200 m.
The stems are erect or decumbent and can reach 2.5 m tall. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate, 8 to 18 cm long and 2 to 6 cm wide. The inflorescence is hemispherical and many-flowered, with pedicels 3.5 to 7 cm long. The corolla is yellowish white with orange lobe tips, strongly reflexed from the base; the corona lobes are yellow and narrowly lanceolate, 8 to 9 mm long, with the outer angles extended into pointed spurs that rise above the stigma.
It is not listed in the CITES Appendices.
